Biography
Guido Sotriffer was born in Ortisei, in the Dolomites, on 20 February 1936, the son of Anton, entrepreneur and trader, and Notburga Demetz. Sixth of eight children, he spent his childhood in his native country. At the age of 13 he lost his mother.
He attends the Art School, sculpture section. Professor Salvatore Li Rosi encouraged Guido’s father to start his academic studies.
In 1958 he married Christl Niederwieser. In the same year he set up his first studio in Ponte Gardena and formed friendly relationships with the sculptor Guido Daurù.
In 1961 his father died and the young family moved to their father’s house in Ortisei.
In 1964 he worked in Augusto Murer’s studio in Falcade. He met Renato Guttuso, who encouraged and supported him during the exhibition in Varese. He went to Conegliano in the studio of Giuseppe Zigaina. He becomes an active member of the association “Südtiroler Künstlerbund“. He has professional and friendly relationships with painters and sculptors from Val Gardena. He is a member of the selection board for the Provincial Sculpture Competition for a school in Laives. Proposed for a teaching assignment at the Art School of Ortisei, declines to continue the work of artist. He undertook numerous trips abroad, among others to London, where he visited the retrospective of Henry Moore.
His house in Ortisei became a meeting place and a place for creative exchange among well-known artists.
In 1989 he stayed in Venice for a few months. In Rome he performs a large Via Crucis for the church S. Igino Papa and a high relief depicting the Cenacle for the new church of San Vincenzo Pallotti, in the district of Pietralata. He obtained an award from the Municipality of Ortisei after the donation of the sculpture “Le quattro età” to the city museum Gherdëina.
To devote himself to painting, he moved his studio to Via Pedetliva in Ortisei. He stayed in Paris. Visit Zadkine’s studio and travel to Jabekke to visit the Constant Permeke museum. Stay in Nice, Saint Paul de Vence and Antibes. Visit Arturo Martini’s studio located in a former monastery in Vado Ligure.
He falls seriously ill following a heart attack. After recovering, he stayed in the Canton of Ticino.
Guido Sotriffer died suddenly on 5 November 1998 in Ortisei.
